Cold Weather Safety Guidelines

Cold Weather Safety Guidelines

General Guideline: If the temperature is below zero, considering wind chill factor, students will be kept inside. If temperature is zero or above with no wind chill factor, students will have recess outside.

If below zero, the following guidelines are used:

Before School: Cold weather signs will be posted at the doors notifying students that they are to come inside before the bell rings. Paraeducator supervision will be provided in the halls. Teachers will provide reading materials in the hallways before school starts in the morning.

Morning & Afternoon Recess: Students will be allowed to play quiet games in the halls outside their classrooms. Paraeducators will supervise students in the halls.

Noon Recess: Students will be kept inside playing quiet games in the halls outside their classrooms. Paraeducatiors who would be supervising outside will supervise students during this time.

Dismissal Time: Students will be held inside until ride arrives as follows:

  • Bus Students: Will wait inside the Entry 1 (Main Entrance) door until their bus is ready for boarding.
  • Entry 1 (Main) Pickup: Students will wait inside door until the Paraeducator in charge indicates it is time to find their ride.
  • Entry 2 (North) Pickup: Students will wait inside door with the Paraeducator in charge indicating when their ride has arrived.
  • Custer Avenue on McHugh Crossing: Students will wait inside main entrance door with the Paraeducator in charge and exit with the Paraeducator when it is time to walk and cross Custer and McHugh.
  • Benton Avenue and Cooney Crossing: Students will wait inside the North door with the Paraeducator in charge and walk together to the crossing when directed to do so.
  • Kindergarten: Students in kindergarten who will be picked-up will wait in their classroom and parents will pick them up from there.

All Walking Students: Parents of children who walk home please follow the weather conditions and inform the school if you do not want your child to walk home. If the weather dramatically changes and we do not hear from you, we will hold them at school.
